<idAbs>The composite risk dataset is the central product of the 2024 National Insect and Disease Risk Map (NIDRM). Risk is defined as: the expectation that 25 percent or more of the standing live basal area of trees greater than 1 inch in diameter will die over a 15-year (2024 to 2038) time frame due to insects and diseases. The 2024 NIDRM represents the integration of 172 individual insect and disease hazard models, all constructed within a common GIS-based, multi-criteria framework that can account for regional variations in forest health. The production of the 2024 Risk Map has been a highly collaborative process led by the USDA Forest Service (Forest Service) Forest Health Assessment and Applied Sciences Team (FHAAST) and Forest Health Protection (FHP). </idAbs>
<idPurp>The primary goal of the 2024 National Insect and Disease Risk Map (NIDRM) is to provide policy makers, USDA officials, and federal and state land managers with a strategic assessment of the risk of tree mortality due to major insects and diseases. Risk, or more precisely, “hazard”, is defined as: the expectation that, without remediation, 25 percent or more of the standing live basal area of trees greater than 1 inch in diameter will die over a 15-year (2024 to 2038) time frame due to insects and diseases. The 2024 NIDRM is as a strategic, broad-scale planning tool that can be used for administrative activities and work planning</idPurp>

<stepDesc>Identify, rank, and weight GIS layers that act as factors and constraints (i.e., criteria) to determine the susceptibility and vulnerability of hosts or host groups to each risk agent. Sum the basal area (BA) losses from all damage agents (i.e., each of the tbaloss_<pest code> rasters). Identify areas that are at risk of encountering a 25% or greater loss of total BA in the next 15 years. ___ Note: When more than one agent was responsible for mortality within a single host tree species, the final host-specific BA mortality rate was derived by summing the individual agent mortality rates, and truncating the sum such that it did not exceed 100%.</stepDesc>
